Two Summit students will compete at the state Visual Art Scholastic Event, VASE for short, on Friday, April 25. They earned this honor after advancing from competing at the regional level on March 1.
Freshman Domenic Gray adores finding new opportunities in the hobbies he loves, so when he had the chance to apply to the VASE art competition, he took it. With the support of his father and sister, who inspired him to draw, he submitted his finished piece into the art show.
Gray wants to continue art and experiment with his favorite hobby.
“I’m always trying to find something new to do in art,” Gray said.
Even though Gray loves art, he doesn’t want to make a career out of it.
“It takes all the love out of it and more into a job,” Gray said.
In his future, he wants to continue his hobbies and learn from them.
“I want to continue art for my own personal growth and not for money,” Gray said.
Sophomore Kendra Estrada loves nature as much as she loves art, the calming and peaceful nature inspires her love for wanting to draw it on paper. Even though she was nervous about submitting her art piece into the competition, she followed through.
Estrada was astonished that she advanced to state but is appreciative.
“I was a little surprised because I didn’t think that my art was going to make it this year, but it’s going to be a fun experience,” Estrada said. “I’m excited for that.”
Her love of nature inspires her to put paint brush to canvas.
“Spring is my favorite season, it brings me peace,” Estrada said. “And I put that feeling into my art.”
In the future, she wants to continue improving and experimenting with her artwork and skills.
“I’m hoping to improve my art and participate in VASE next year,” Estrada said. “I’m focusing on doing something different with my painting.”
